Prusa's most interesting product in years is now arriving in real customers' hands. The INDX — an eight-tool toolchanger system for the CORE One family — has begun shipping in its limited Founders Edition, with Prusa's own kits following close behind.
If you've been waiting for someone to challenge Bambu's AMS-style dominance in multi-material printing with a fundamentally different approach, this is that challenge. Here's everything we know, what it costs, and who should care.
First: INDX is not IDEX
The name trips everyone up, so let's clear it up front — because the two technologies are completely different:
- IDEX (Independent Dual EXtruders) means two separate print heads that move independently on the X-axis. Two heads, two materials, plus party tricks like printing two copies of an object simultaneously. The Snapmaker J1s is a classic IDEX machine.
- INDX is Prusa's brand name for a toolchanger: one active printhead that picks up and docks up to eight passive tools, one at a time. One head, eight materials.
Different acronym, different architecture, different strengths. IDEX gives you two materials fast; a toolchanger gives you many materials cleanly.
How INDX actually works
Three engineering choices make INDX genuinely novel rather than "XL technology in a smaller box":
Passive tools with induction heating. Unlike the Prusa XL — where each of the five toolheads is a complete print head with its own hotend — INDX tools are "nearly massless" nozzle units with no heater block at all. The single active head heats each nozzle by induction, taking it from cold to printing temperature in seconds. Less moving mass means less inertia, which is what makes an eight-tool system practical on a desktop CoreXY frame.
Almost zero purge waste. Prusa states material purge of around 13 milligrams per tool swap — their comparison puts that at 5× less than the most efficient competing systems and roughly 30× less than filament-rewinding systems (the AMS-style approach, where one hotend swaps filament in and out and purges the old color into a waste pile every change). If you've ever watched an AMS purge tower grow taller than your actual model, 13 mg per swap is the headline number.
Fast self-calibration. Each tool's XY offset is measured by eddy-current sensing in about 15 seconds per toolhead — Prusa claims roughly 20× faster than the pin-based calibration on the XL.

The kits convert an existing CORE One or CORE One+ — INDX is exclusive to that platform. Hardened, high-flow 0.4 mm nozzles are standard on every tool.
The full stack for a new buyer: a CORE One+ at $1,599 plus the 8-tool kit at $999 — about $2,600 for an enclosed, 8-material machine. That undercuts a comparable 5-tool XL setup while doubling the (nozzle) material count, though the XL keeps its own advantages below.

The honest read: AMS-style remains the budget champion — nothing touches a P1S + AMS on price. The XL remains the big-format flexibility champion — larger volume, and each toolhead is a complete unit that can eventually host non-standard tools. INDX aims at the sweet spot: many materials, minimal waste, enclosed chamber, on a desktop-sized machine.
Should you buy, wait, or ignore?
If you already own a CORE One/One+: this is the easiest upgrade decision Prusa has ever offered you. The 4-tool kit at $749 turns your printer into something no competitor matches at the price.
If you're shopping for a multi-material printer today: it depends on your patience. The Prusa Edition kits are weeks away and first-batch quantities will be tight; AMS-style systems are proven, cheap, and available now.
